Choosing The Right Transportation Lift For Your Power Scooter

For individuals that suffer from mobility issues, a power mobility scooter can be a lifesaver. Instead of allowing your physical limitations to prevent you from enjoying life, with a mobility scooter you can go virtually anywhere. In order to get the most use out of your new mobility aid, you need to be able to safely and securely transport it. Taking the time to familiarize yourself with the different options can help you make a more informed choice.

Inside Lifts

As the name would suggest, inside power scooter lifts are installed on the inside of your vehicle. You simply attach the scooter to the lift and it is lifted into the rear of your vehicle. For this reason, you need a vehicle with a very wide and tall trunk or flat area, such as an SUV or truck. If you need to transport your scooter during inclement weather this type of lift is very helpful because it keeps your scooter secure on the inside.

However, your physical limitations and abilities will have a significant influence on whether or not this type of model is right for you. You need to be able to physically open and close your truck or rear door area in order to place the scooter on the lift. If this is something you're unable to do, this style of lift probably won't work for you.

Outside Power Lifts

Outside power lifts are installed on the outside of your vehicle. While this style makes it more difficult to transport your scooter during periods of inclement weather, it doesn't come with as many limitations. First, you don't need to have a large vehicle to transport your scooter. Even a small coupe can have the lift attachment installed. As a precautionary, if you plan to use this style of lift, it's best to have your vehicle inspected first.

The lift is installed just under the base of your rear bumper. If there are any weak spots in the area, the weight of the lift could cause the bumper to detach. Secondly, you don't have to worry about lifting or lowering any large rear doors to remove your scooter from the vehicle. You can easily operate the unit with a simple press of the button to lower and lift the scooter.

When it comes to choosing a unit to transport your power mobility scooter, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Before making your decision, it's a good idea to work with a mobility consultant who will take into account your vehicle, your physical abilities and your specific scooter model to help you make the best decision when you go to buy wheelchairs or a power mobility scooter.

Soon, she learned to manage her disease through the use of insulin shots. Nowadays, she thinks nothing about carrying around her cooler filled with life sustaining insulin shots. She also uses a portable device that monitors her insulin levels. On this blog, you will learn how to thrive after a diabetes diagnoses with the help of the right medical equipment and supplies.
